One of the first times I truly became aware of the difference between looking and seeing was when I was studying with Dr. Jerry Epstein. Whenever you take any of his classes, he starts out inviting people to introduce themselves to the rest of the group. When it was my turn to introduce myself, I said my name Josie with emphasis on the Jo. He politely asked me to repeat my name; well this went on three times. On the third try I put the emphasis on the Sie/See of Josie. Finally satisfied, he exclaimed, “She finally got it right”. I have never forgotten that moment. It was like a big light went off in my head. It is a key for me, a reminder to follow and trust my own seeing. I am forever grateful to him, he is one of the beacons of lights in New York City.
Difference Between Looking and Seeing
There is a great difference between looking and seeing. Looking means turning ones direction to see something, implying that you have an idea in mind of what you are looking for. If you have an idea, your looking is already prejudiced, you have concept in your head, an outcome in mind. You’re seeing is already corrupted, borrowed, not uniquely yours and you can so easily miss the mark.
Seeing With The Eyes Of A Child
Seeing requires more than looking. It requires distance, detachment, looking at the overall picture from afar. Seeing requires looking with the eyes of a child, unprejudiced, and imaginative. Seeing is simple requires no analyzing, no categorizing. The mind is quiet, watchful, available, and open and cannot be manipulated. All beliefs, philosophies, theologies are dropped, you are empty handed. There is no idea to be enforced. It does not require any work on our part, only a willingness to dive deep into the sacredness of life.
Breathing Out
St. Theresa of Avila, my new friend, created the following imaginal exercise. Breathe out with long slow exhalation through the mouth, normal in breath through the nose three times:
“Relax into the quietness of your being. Lay down your need to control, and agree to let the divine guide you. Breathe, and trust that you will be taken where you need to go. Breathe deeper and deeper into your being—let yourself go to wherever you are being taken.”
